april showers bring you know.....
Conference was wonderful today.
General Conference is a time of celebration and happiness. It’s an event that means many different things to different people. To those who have misplaced their new year’s resolutions, it’s a chance to begin anew and set new goals. The Spring season gets many families into Spring cleaning mode, both physically and spiritually, as we take a look at what has collected in our corners. To us winter hermits, it’s often the first time that we venture out of the house to begin the spring yard work.
To thousands of fortunate international members and leaders, General Conference is the ideal time to schedule a trip to Salt Lake City to see Conference in person. For most members around the world it’s an opportunity to see Prophets, Apostles, and Church leaders who have become as dear to us as our own beloved friends and family members though we may never see them in person as long as we both live. Conference is a time where our full-time missionaries can introduce investigators to the miracle of modern-day Prophets and Apostles. It’s a time where hundreds of missionary reunions are held and old friendships are rekindled. And of course, Conference is the dream of every couch-potato, the chance to do their duty by sitting home and watching TV. No matter which camps you fall into can there really be a better time in the year than spring General Conference?
In his welcome address in last October’s 2008 General Conference, our dear Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson said, “Now, my brothers and sisters, we have come here to be instructed and inspired. Some of you are new in the Church. We welcome you. Some of you are struggling with problems, with challenges, with disappointments, with losses. We love you and pray for you.
Many messages will be shared during the next two days. I can assure you that those men and women who will speak to you have prayed about what they should say. They have been inspired and impressed as they have sought heaven’s help and direction. Our Heavenly Father is mindful of each one of us and our needs. May we be filled with His Spirit as we partake of the proceedings of this, the 178th Semiannual General Conference of the Church.”
Isn’t it interesting that the verb our Prophet chose to use is “partake.” He could have said observe, watch, participate, enjoy, listen, attend, or a multitude of other words, and yet he carefully chose “partake.” It brings to mind what we should be doing every other Sunday of the year, which is partaking of the sacrament in remembrance of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Conferences then are a time to partake of spiritual food as we are fed a banquet of scripture-based lessons, stories, and principles. Not even a Polynesian feast could compare to the more than forty talks that are delivered by men and women of Christ over the ten hours of broadcasts. Those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” will truly “be filled” 3 Nephi 12:6.
Our hope is that you will celebrate this season of renewal by feasting on the words of Christ as delivered by his servants. And may you listen to the “unspoken words” that are delivered to you by the power of the Holy Ghost regarding your personal situations (Elder Marion G. Romney, CR April 1964).
We are thankful for our blessings..hot or cold...
